MS Summer Internship Program

Call for 2018-2019 Summer Internship Award

Graduate Group in Biostatistics

Dear MS students:

On behalf of the Executive Committee in the Biostatistics Graduate Group, I am pleased to announce this year’s call for summer internship opportunities for the 1st year MS students in the Biostatistics Program.

The goal of the Biostatistics MS Student Internship program is to provide a mentored summer research experience in Biostatistics. Students will gain hands-on experience in real life research conducted by faculty in the Biostatistics Graduate Group.  Students will receive a stipend of $3,000 for 10-week program in research for the summer of 2018.  Students are expected to work 20 hours per week and meet weekly with faculty mentors. 10 consecutive weeks commitment is required. Students will need to provide the final report (5-6 page technical report) and present their research at one Biostatistics seminar in the subsequent Fall or Winter quarter. The number of the awards will depend on the number of qualified applicants as we have only a limited amount of funds to award.

Eligibility: All the 1st year MS students in the Biostatistics program are eligible to apply.

How to apply: Interested students should identify a faculty member in the Graduate Group in Biostatistics (see for the GGB faculty roaster) as their mentor who will sponsor you and discuss a possible summer research project in the field of Biostatistics. The project must have a data analysis component with real biological or health-related data using an adequate statistical method. After identifying a faculty mentor and research project, students can apply to the internship program by submitting a 1-2 page research proposal that describes your proposed research project, including the following information: faculty mentor, topic of research, scientific questions to be addressed, brief description of real data set and statistical methods to use, and expected outcomes of the project.

Internship Period: 10 consecutive weeks between June 18, 2018- September 14, 2018 [The final report is due by September 21, 2018 (5:00pm PST)]

Deadline: May 15, 2018 (5:00pm PST)

Notice of Award: June 1, 2018. Note that the program may reach out to candidates to request an in-person interview prior to deciding about awards.
